Admiralty House, Government building at Mount Wise, Plymouth, England
Admiralty House is a limestone building on Mount Wise featuring late 18th-century elements with Georgian design. The structure includes not only main rooms but also an extensive underground tunnel network that runs beneath the garden.
The building was designed between 1789 and 1793 by James Wyatt and first served as a Government House. It later became the residence of Plymouth's military Governor and was converted into a bomb-proof command center during World War II.
The building takes its name from the British Admiralty and shows how closely Plymouth connects to naval affairs. Visitors can observe the rooms once used by important naval administrators, which still reflect this historical relationship today.
The building sits on a hill overlooking Plymouth and is easily reached from the city center. The underground tunnels are partially accessible during visits, with conditions below ground being cool and dark.
Beneath the garden lies a secret tunnel system that served as a bomb-proof shelter for military commanders during World War II. This underground installation was so important that it became one of Plymouth's lesser-known wartime defense measures.
