Mount Oswald, Georgian manor house in Durham, England
Mount Oswald is an English country house in Durham, built in 1800 and expanded in 1830 by architect Phillip Wyatt. The Grade II listed building displays architectural characteristics typical of its construction periods.
Built in 1800 for London merchant John Richardby, the house passed to Thomas Wilkinson, a former Durham mayor, in 1806. By 1934 it had become a golf club, reflecting how country estates changed purpose over time.
The house recalls the era when Durham's merchant families built retreats outside the city, and you can sense that desire for a country setting close to town through its positioning and layout.
The site now houses student accommodation for Durham University and some areas are not open to the public. Check ahead to find out which parts you can visit and which are reserved for residents.
The building now houses the Durham County Archives and the Durham Light Infantry Collection following a major 2020 development project. This unexpected combination connects the country house to local military and administrative heritage.
