Gordon Craig Theatre, Theatre in Stevenage, United Kingdom
Gordon Craig Theatre is a theatre in Stevenage, England, with a fan-shaped auditorium and a larger concert hall designed for different types of performances. The building also contains rehearsal studios, scenic workshops, costume facilities, a cafe, a bar, and an art gallery.
The theatre was planned as part of Stevenage's development as a new town and opened in 1976. It was built during a period when Stevenage was expanding rapidly and needed public cultural spaces to serve its growing population.
The theatre takes its name from Edward Gordon Craig, a British theatre artist who changed the way stage design was approached in the 20th century. The foyer gallery shows work by local artists and gives visitors something to look at before a performance begins.
The theatre has accessible entrances and parking nearby, making it easy to reach by car or on foot from the town centre. Arriving a little early gives you time to look around the gallery or stop at the cafe before the show.
Inside the building there is a Christie organ built in 1932 that was originally installed in a cinema in Liverpool. It is still played at special concerts today, which makes it one of the few surviving cinema organs in England still in regular use.
