Caldwall Castle, Medieval castle in Kidderminster, England.
Caldwall Castle is an octagonal tower in Kidderminster with two storeys and a cellar built from local sandstone. The structure features moulded cornices and embattled parapets and has been converted to a private residence after restoration work in 1990.
The tower was built in the first half of the 14th century as a fortified dwelling. Major renovations in the late 15th century gave it much of the form we see today.
The tower takes its name from the landscape surrounding it and shows how medieval people built fortified homes for their families. The structure has served as a residence throughout its existence, reflecting how people adapted the space to suit their lives.
The tower is a private residence and not open to the public, so visitors can only view it from outside. The best view is from the surrounding street where the structure and stonework details are clearly visible.
Excavations in the 1960s found evidence of human settlement at this location spanning roughly 800 years. Early medieval metalwork discoveries show that people lived here long before the current tower was built.
