St Luke's Church, Wallsend, Anglican church in Wallsend, England
St Luke's Church is an Anglican church in Wallsend with walls of rock-faced sandstone, dressed stone details, and a roof of Welsh slate. The structure spans four bays with stone gable copings that give it a defined profile.
Construction of the church started in 1885 with support from G.B. Hunter, a shipbuilder from Swan Hunter, and the building was consecrated in 1887. The work reflected the area's growth during that period.
The east window was created by artist Wilhelmina Geddes as a First World War memorial depicting the Crucifixion through stained glass. Visitors can see how this colorful work draws attention and creates a focal point inside the building.
The building sits at the corner of Frank Street and Station Road, making it easy to locate. Following renovations completed in 2010, it offers community rooms and halls for various activities.
During construction, quicksand was discovered in the foundation, forcing engineers to reduce the planned tower height. This unexpected challenge shaped the building's appearance as it stands today.
