Astronomy Centre

The Astronomy Centre is an astronomical observatory in Todmorden featuring a three-level circular building topped with an aluminum dome. Inside, fourteen separate telescope mountings allow observers to study the night sky from different angles.

Peter Drew, Linda Simonian, and Rob Miller founded this observatory in 1982 on the site of a former factory in the Pennines. Since then, it has grown into a respected center for stargazing in the area.

Schools and youth groups visit regularly to observe the night sky and learn about astronomy together. These gatherings have become a key part of how the community engages with the sciences.

Visits typically happen on Saturday evenings, so check ahead and bring warm clothing for outdoor stargazing. The location sits at a higher elevation, making it most accessible on clear nights away from light pollution.

The center houses a large 30-inch open truss Newtonian telescope for detailed observations. Notably, the team also maintains a 42.6-inch mirror blank in reserve, preserving the possibility for future expansion of the facility.
