Forton Barracks is a military facility in Gosport featuring four tall pavilions connected by arcades that enclose one of England's largest parade grounds. The complex housed around 3,000 personnel and contained amenities including a 600-seat theatre, gymnasium, and outdoor swimming pool.
The site was established in 1807 by the Board of Ordnance on land purchased from Mathew Carter near Forton Creek. In 1923 it was converted to HMS St Vincent and served as a Royal Navy training centre until 1969, when it became St Vincent College.
The Royal Marine Light Infantry left its mark on the surrounding area between 1848 and 1923 by building residential quarters, shops, and schools. These structures still shape the local landscape and show how deeply the military was woven into community life.
