Eastney Barracks, Military complex in Portsmouth, England
Eastney Barracks is a military complex in Portsmouth consisting of seven connected blocks that face the sea and form the second longest barracks frontage in Britain after Woolwich Artillery Barracks. The complex has been transformed into residential housing since 1995, with the officers' mess building scheduled for conversion into a luxury hotel.
Eastney Barracks was built in 1867 as the headquarters for the Royal Marine Artillery, relocating from Fort Cumberland. The facility played a key role in strengthening British coastal defenses during the late 1800s.
The former officers' mess once housed the Royal Marines Museum from 1972 to 2017, displaying military artifacts and historical exhibitions that told the story of the Royal Marines.
The complex is now primarily residential housing, so visitor access is limited. Some structures like the main gate and clock tower can be viewed from outside when walking along the street nearby.
The site contains multiple listed buildings including a main gate, guardroom, offices, and a clock tower that showcase Victorian military architecture. These structures remain visible with their original design details and define the character of the location today.
