The building was constructed in the 1860s and initially served as the Royal Marine Artillery headquarters. It opened as a museum in 1958 and has preserved the history of this military corps ever since.

The museum is currently closed for renovations and building work. Visitors can explore temporary displays in the nearby Action Stations area while the main site undergoes improvements.
The collection holds all ten Victoria Crosses ever awarded to the Corps, alongside numerous Naval General Service Medals spanning multiple centuries. These decorations represent acts of exceptional bravery and service across different eras.
