Fort Cumberland

Fort Cumberland extends over 24 acres of land with five bastions and a ravelin, forming a pentagonal structure at the entrance of Langstone Harbour.

The Duke of Cumberland established the initial fortification in 1747, followed by an extensive reconstruction between 1785 and 1812 to protect Portsmouth's Royal Navy Dockyard.

The fort stands as a testament to 18th-century military engineering, demonstrating the advanced defensive techniques through its bastion trace design and strategic positioning.

Access to Fort Cumberland requires advance booking for guided tours, with special openings during Heritage Open Days throughout the year.

The Portsmouth Distillery Company operates within the fort's premises, producing spirits while maintaining the building's historical features.
