Blue House Farm, Nature reserve in North Fambridge, Essex, United Kingdom
Blue House Farm is a nature reserve along the River Crouch estuary, combining coastal grazing marshes, wetlands, ponds, creeks, and cultivated fields. The site spans several hundred hectares and forms a complex mix of water bodies and grazing areas.
The land was transformed from saltmarsh to grazing pastures through the construction of sea walls and later designated for protection. This change allowed coastal management while creating valuable habitat for wildlife.
The farm maintains traditional farming methods with seasonal herds that move across the land regularly. Visitors can observe how grazing animals shape the vegetation and influence the landscape throughout the year.
The reserve can be explored via a walking route of about 4 kilometers with three bird observation hides along the way. Parking is limited at the entrance, so visiting during quieter times helps.
Each winter thousands of brent geese from Siberia gather here alongside other migrating waterbirds. This distant journey makes the site a crucial stopover for birds traveling between continents.
