Mentmore Towers

Mentmore Towers stands as a large nineteenth-century mansion constructed using Ancaster ashlar stone with a square floor plan featuring projecting corner towers and Jacobethan architectural elements throughout its two-story main structure.

Built between 1852 and 1854 for Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild, the house was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton and G.H. Stokes to serve as both a private residence and a showcase for an extensive collection of European art and furniture.

The estate stored significant national art collections during World War II, including the Royal Gold State Coach, paintings from the National Portrait Gallery, and tapestries from Hampton Court Palace, protecting these treasures from wartime destruction.

The building appears on the Heritage at Risk Register due to ongoing deterioration of its roof and structure, requiring urgent conservation efforts to prevent further fabric loss and ensure its preservation for future generations.

The mansion has served as a filming location for numerous productions including Batman Begins, The Mummy Returns, and Eyes Wide Shut, with its grand interiors and historic architecture providing an authentic backdrop for cinematic storytelling.
