Guildhall Including Great Hall, Assize Courts And Former City Treasury, Gothic Revival town hall in Plymouth, England.
Guildhall is a Gothic Revival town hall in Plymouth featuring an octagonal tower and a square tower rising to 50 meters on the west front. It houses the Great Hall, Assize Courts, and the former City Treasury within its structure.
The building was completed in 1874 as Plymouth's fifth Guildhall on this site throughout history. It suffered severe damage during the 1941 air raids on the city but successfully reopened in 1959.
The Great Hall contains fourteen stained glass windows that illustrate important moments from Plymouth's past, giving visitors a visual journey through the city's story. The pipe organ by Henry Willis & Sons fills the space with a sense of ceremony and grandeur.
The building hosts graduations, award ceremonies, and weddings in its spacious Great Hall throughout the year. Visitors should be aware that certain areas may not be accessible depending on scheduled events.
The building narrowly escaped demolition in 1951 when a proposal to remove it as part of a new city development plan was blocked by a vote. This decision preserved the structure for future generations to experience.
