Wells House, Ilkley, Grade II listed house at Wells Road, Ilkley, England
Wells House is a three-story building constructed from dark local stone in Italianate style and features projecting towers with cupolas at its corners. The structure is organized around a central inner courtyard that remains a focal point of its architectural design.
The building was constructed between 1854 and 1856 under architect Cuthbert Brodrick and originally served as a hydropathic spa for water cure treatments. A major renovation in the early 2000s converted it into residential apartments while maintaining its original character.
Charles Darwin visited Wells House with his family in October 1859 to undergo water cure treatments while preparing his scientific publications.
The building now functions as a residential complex with 24 apartments and sits at the edge of Ilkley Moors with views across Wharfedale Valley. Public access is limited to the exterior areas since the interior remains private residential space.
A notable naturalist visited the hydropathic establishment in October 1859 with his family to undergo water cure treatments. This stay coincided with the preparation of one of his most important scientific works.
