Spa Baths, Public bathhouse in Ripon, England
Spa Baths is a rectangular stone building in Ripon featuring tall windows and classical architectural details, with an ornate entrance marked by columns at its center. Inside, the structure contains original spa areas and a swimming pool section from the 1930s, both integral to the historic fabric of the building.
The building opened in 1905 with a ceremony led by Princess Henry of Battenberg and served the community as a bathing facility for over a century. It closed in 2021 after decades of operation as an important public space for leisure and wellness.
For over a century, residents of Ripon came here to learn to swim and gather with neighbors, making it a central gathering place for families and the community. The building held important memories for generations who spent their childhood in its halls.
The building is currently closed and not accessible to visitors as it awaits permission for renovation plans. You can see the exterior and classical facade from central Ripon while future plans for redevelopment continue to be developed.
The original spa section will be preserved and converted into commercial units during planned renovation, while the swimming pool wing from the 1930s will be completely demolished. This selective approach saves the building's oldest parts while removing later additions.
