Adrian, County seat in Lenawee County, Michigan, United States
Adrian is the county seat in Lenawee County, located in southeastern Michigan along the Raisin River. The city spans approximately 8 square miles (21 square kilometers) and sits at an elevation of about 240 meters above sea level.
The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad began operations in Adrian in 1833, marking the first railroad system west of New York State. The line initially used horse-drawn cars and shaped early development of the settlement.
The Adrian City Band, founded in 1838, continues to perform and shape the musical life of the community. The Croswell Opera House remains an active venue for performances and cultural events.
Two correctional facilities operated by the Michigan Department of Corrections are located near the city and play a significant role in the local economy. Visitors should be aware that these facilities represent a substantial portion of employment opportunities in the area.
In the late 1800s, Adrian became known as a center for fence production after J. Wallace Page developed the first successful wire fence manufacturing process. This innovation made the city a leading hub for the wire fence industry in the nation.
