Cromwell lies in Middlesex County along the Connecticut River, encompassing 13.5 square miles in the geographical center of Connecticut.

Originally known as Upper Houses of Middletown since 1651, Cromwell gained independent town status in 1851 with a population of 1,259 residents.

The Main Street Historic District preserves numerous architectural elements from different periods, while the Cromwell Historical Society maintains the 1853 Stevens House.

Interstate 91 and Route 9 connect Cromwell to major cities, positioning the town 14 miles south of Hartford and 28 miles northeast of New Haven.

The TPC River Highlands golf course in Cromwell hosts the annual Travelers Championship, drawing professional players from the PGA Tour.
