Cromwell is a town in Middlesex County that stretches along the Connecticut River and sits centrally within the state of Connecticut. The community covers roughly 13 square miles and combines riverside areas with wooded hills farther inland.
The settlement began in 1651 as the northern part of Middletown, originally called Upper Houses. In 1851, the community with about 1,200 residents gained status as a separate town.
