Arrigoni Bridge, Steel through arch bridge in Middletown, Connecticut.
The Arrigoni Bridge is a steel through arch bridge spanning the Connecticut River and connecting Middletown with Portland. Two steel arches form the main structure, which supports traffic on two busy routes crossing the river.
Construction began in 1936 and finished in 1938, replacing an older drawbridge that had served since 1896. The new structure represented a major advance in how vehicles could cross between the two towns.
The bridge links two communities and shapes how people experience the Connecticut River landscape with its steel arches standing against the sky. It has become a landmark that locals and travelers recognize instantly.
The bridge is open daily for vehicle traffic on two main routes and gets busy during commute times. Visiting during off-peak hours makes it easier to observe the structure and take photographs.
Shortly after completion, the bridge received a prize from the American Institute of Steel Construction for its design and construction quality. This award made it a recognized example of modern steel bridge engineering of its era.
