Arrigoni Bridge, Steel through arch bridge in Middletown, Connecticut.

The Arrigoni Bridge extends 1,200 feet across the Connecticut River with two steel arches spanning 600 feet each, connecting Middletown and Portland.

The construction of this steel marvel commenced in 1936 and ended in 1938, replacing an older drawbridge that had served the area since 1896.

The bridge dedication ceremony in August 1938 gathered 100,000 spectators and featured a parade of 22,000 people despite heavy rainfall.

The structure carries Routes 17 and 66 across the Connecticut River, supporting daily traffic of 33,600 vehicles between the two Connecticut communities.

Upon its completion, the Arrigoni Bridge earned first prize from the American Institute of Steel Construction for Most Beautiful Steel Bridge in its category.
