Old Middletown Post Office
Old Middletown Post Office, Former postal building in Main Street Historic District, Middletown, United States.
The Old Middletown Post Office is a two-story limestone building at 291 Main Street defined by arched windows and pilaster elements that frame the facade. The upper level displays elaborately designed windows and a decorative cornice that set it apart from neighboring structures.
The building was completed in 1916 and designed to reflect the Renaissance Revival style popular in federal architecture during that period. It operated as the town's post office for about 60 years until postal operations relocated elsewhere.
The building displays early 20th-century architectural styles that define Middletown's historic downtown. Walking past it on Main Street, you notice how its design reflects the era when postal buildings were built as important civic structures.
The building sits at the corner of Court and Main Streets, making it easy to find while exploring the historic downtown area. Since it now serves as office space for a bank, it is not open to the public and should be viewed from the outside.
The smooth limestone exterior stands out distinctly from neighboring structures built in red brick or darker stone materials. This light-colored surface makes the building a visual focal point within the historic district.
