Jasper County, Administrative county in southwestern Missouri, United States
Jasper County spans 641 square miles of terrain, intersected by Interstate 44 and featuring a combination of urban centers and rural landscapes throughout its territory.
The Missouri Legislature established Jasper County on January 29, 1841, naming it after Revolutionary War hero William Jasper and designating Carthage as its seat.
The territory belonged to the Osage Native Americans, who identified themselves as Ni-U-Kon-Ska and controlled lands between Missouri, Osage, and Arkansas rivers.
The county maintains several departments including Circuit Court, Highway Department, and Sheriff's Office, providing administrative services to its 122,761 residents.
A devastating EF5 multiple-vortex tornado struck the county in 2011, particularly affecting Joplin and marking one of the deadliest tornado events in American history.
