Precious Moments Park and Chapel, Amusement park in Carthage, United States

Precious Moments Park is a 13-hectare site in Carthage, Missouri, built around the Precious Moments brand of figurines created by illustrator Sam Butcher. A winding drive leads past bronze sculptures of the big-eyed children, a wedding gazebo, fountains and flower beds to the Precious Moments Chapel, a stone building with stained-glass windows and a vaulted ceiling. Inside, Butcher painted the walls and ceiling with murals of biblical scenes populated by his child figures.

Samuel J. Butcher, the artist behind the Precious Moments figurines, opened the park in Carthage in 1989 on land near his company's headquarters; the town was chosen partly because of its position on Interstate 44. The chapel followed in 1990, and Butcher painted its interior murals himself over several years. The site grew into a visitor attraction combining the chapel, gardens and a gift shop.

The chapel displays biblical scenes through colorful murals featuring characteristic big-eyed child figures, which present religious stories in a playful visual language. Visitors experience a direct connection between faith and artistic expression through this unconventional approach to depicting sacred narratives.

The park grounds are accessible from Interstate 44 and designed for easy walking. Visitors should plan for several hours to see everything and wear comfortable shoes from the start of their visit.

The chapel interior was painted by a single artist over many years, with every figure and scene executed by hand. This labor-intensive personal creative effort makes the space a rare example of sustained artistic dedication.
