Streator, Industrial city in north-central Illinois, United States
Streator is an industrial city in north-central Illinois that spans across LaSalle and Livingston counties. It sits along the Vermilion River and contains numerous manufacturing plants and retail shops distributed throughout its neighborhoods.
The city began in 1866 when coal mining started, which transformed it into a major industrial center. These early mining operations attracted workers who established the foundations of the community that exists today.
The William C. Schiffbauer Center for the Performing Arts and the Majestic Theatre, which dates to 1907, serve as gathering places where residents and visitors experience theater and live performances. These two venues shape the city's cultural identity and offer regular entertainment to the community.
The city is served by Norfolk Southern Railway and BNSF Railway, while Illinois State Routes 23 and 18 intersect in the downtown area. These transportation connections provide good access to different parts of the city and surrounding regions.
After coal mining declined, glass manufacturing became the driving force of the local economy and replaced mining as the primary industry. This shift shows how the city adapted to economic changes and developed a new manufacturing foundation.
