Guttenberg, Residential town in Hudson County, United States
Guttenberg is a residential municipality in Hudson County on the west side of the Hudson River, directly across from Manhattan. The town spans only four city blocks and is dominated by the Galaxy Towers rising along the waterfront, which make up much of its compact footprint.
In 1859, New York investors purchased William Cooper's farmland and founded the settlement for German immigrants. Development followed quickly as European families arrived and settled the steep riverbank, naming the town after the famous inventor.
The municipality takes its name from Johannes Gutenberg, the printing press inventor, reflecting the German roots of its first settlers. Latin American influences now shape daily life along the streets, where Spanish-speaking shops and restaurants set the rhythm of the neighborhood.
The municipality works well for a short walk along the waterfront with views of the Manhattan skyline. Visitors who want to linger can find cafes and small shops in the center that offer insight into daily life in this compact town.
The municipality ranks among the most densely populated places in the state, with over 62,000 residents per square mile. This exceptional concentration arises from the many high-rises packed onto a tiny footprint between the palisade cliff and the riverbank.
