Hudson, River port city in Columbia County, New York, United States
Hudson is a river town in Columbia County in the state of New York. Streets climb from the waterfront and show rows of houses with brick facades and bay windows.
Whalers from New England founded the place in 1783 as a trading port. The location on the river made the town a center for transporting goods to Albany and New York City.
The main thoroughfare holds small shops in restored townhouses used by dealers and gallery owners. Many facades still show elements from the late 18th century, recognizable in the window frames and door lintels.
The station at the southern edge connects the town with New York City and Albany. Most shops and restaurants sit along Warren Street, which can be walked end to end in about 20 minutes.
An underground tunnel connects the city hall with a building at the waterfront, once used for transporting goods. Today the passage remains closed, but old maps show its route beneath Parade Hill.
