Mason City is the county seat in Cerro Gordo County in the state of Iowa and stretches along the Winnebago River through different residential and commercial districts. The city sits at an elevation of 1,130 feet (344 m) and connects local roads with regional routes.
The settlement started in 1853 under the name Shibboleth and was renamed in 1855 after Mason Long, the son of an early founder. The community grew during the 19th century along the river into a regional trade center.
