The peninsula became a major naval air station in 1941 and served as a training center for pilots and aircraft maintenance during World War II. The base played a central role in preparing and supporting military aviation operations throughout the war.
The Seabee Museum and Memorial Park here honor the Naval Construction Battalions through exhibits that show how these workers built and maintained military infrastructure. Visitors can see the tools and structures that represent their everyday contributions during wartime.
The site is easily reached via Rhode Island Route 403 and includes distinct areas for different activities and visits. Walking through the grounds gives you the best sense of the museums, parks, and waterfront areas.
Engineers developed the prefabricated steel semicircular Quonset hut here in 1941 for military use. This portable structure became widely copied and used around the world for both civilian and military purposes.
