Mitchell, County seat in South Dakota, United States
Mitchell sits along the James River in South Dakota and serves as the county seat of Davison County. The city features a mix of residential neighborhoods, downtown commercial areas, and public parks spread across its landscape.
The city was established in 1879 when settlers moved to the area near Firesteel Creek. It was named after Alexander Mitchell, president of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad, which played a key role in the region's growth.
The Dakota Discovery Museum displays regional history through authentic structures and objects from early settlement times. Visitors can explore how people lived and worked during the pioneer era in this part of the Great Plains.
Lake Mitchell and the Mitchell Recreational Center serve as the main spots for outdoor and indoor activities throughout the year. Check ahead to see which facilities are open and what activities are currently available when you plan your visit.
The Corn Palace is famous for having its exterior walls redecorated each year with different varieties of corn and grains. Each year brings new mural designs with different themes and color combinations.
