Blume High School, high school in Ohio, United States
Blume High School is a high school building in Wapakoneta, Ohio, originally designed by architect William M. Runkle and built in 1908. Major expansions in the mid-1920s added a gymnasium, library, and additional brick sections designed by Frank Packard to accommodate growing student enrollment.
The building was constructed in 1908 as a modern school with sturdy masonry and expanded in the 1920s with a gymnasium and library. After a new high school opened in 1959, this building served as a junior high school until closing in 1990, eventually being converted to residential apartments.
The school's name honors L.N. Blume, whose donation funded the library and gymnasium built in the 1920s. This gift represented community investment in education and remained a point of local pride throughout the school's years as an active institution.
The building is located on South Blackhoof Street and displays architectural features from different periods that are visible from the street. Visitors can observe the construction details and recognize the distinct phases of building additions from public areas.
Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, was from Wapakoneta and left this school community to become an astronaut. This connection gives the school a link to one of humanity's greatest achievements beyond its local architectural significance.
