Brown's Lake Bog, Protected wetland ecosystem near Wooster, Ohio, US.
Brown's Lake Bog is a protected wetland preserve near Wooster featuring a kettle lake, a floating sphagnum moss mat, and forested areas that form the natural bog system. The site displays the layered structure of a mature bog with distinct zones of vegetation and water.
The Nature Conservancy purchased the land in 1966 and secured its designation as a National Natural Landmark the following year. This early protection action reflected growing recognition of the site's ecological value and rarity.
The site serves as an outdoor classroom where visitors can observe how rare wetland plants thrive in acidic conditions. Local groups use the space to teach about the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems for future generations.
The trails are open from sunrise to sunset and informational signs guide visitors through the different habitats. Sturdy footwear is important since the ground can be soft and slippery, especially in wetter areas.
The preserve contains more than 20 rare plant species including bog buckbean, pitcher plants, and orchids that thrive in its acidic environment. This concentration of specialized plants makes it a valuable location for botanical research and learning.
