Camden State Park, State park in Lyon County, United States.
Camden State Park is a Minnesota state park in Lyon County, situated along the Redwood River where steep wooded valleys run down to the water's edge. The terrain shifts between forested slopes, open grassland sections, and river banks, giving the park a varied landscape within a relatively compact area.
In the 1830s, Joseph LaFramboise set up a trading post here, making this one of the earliest points of European contact in this part of Minnesota. The village of Jones Mill later grew on this same land and was abandoned in the 1930s, leaving behind traces that can still be seen inside the park.
The Sioux Lookout observation point takes its name from the Dakota people who once used this land, and visitors can still walk up to it today. From there, the view over the river valley gives a clear sense of why this spot mattered to those who lived here before.
The park has two campgrounds and a network of trails that can be used for hiking or mountain biking, so it works well for an overnight stay or a full day visit. Trails range in difficulty, and some viewpoints require a short climb, so wearing sturdy footwear makes the visit more comfortable.
Despite sitting in one of the oldest farming areas of Minnesota, the park contains strips of native prairie along the river that give a sense of what the land looked like before it was plowed. Interpretive trails inside the park explain the role of these grasslands in the region's ecosystem, which is something most visitors do not expect to find here.
