Conowingo Bridge, Road bridge near Conowingo, Maryland, United States.
Conowingo Bridge is a steel road bridge that carries traffic across the Susquehanna River between Cecil and Harford counties in Maryland. The structure spans the river with lanes for vehicles moving in both directions.
A wooden covered bridge designed by Louis Wernwag opened in 1820 but was destroyed by flooding in 1846. Maryland purchased the structure in 1911 and removed all toll fees to serve the public.
During the Civil War, Federal troops maintained control of the bridge as it represented the sole crossing point over the lower Susquehanna River.
Vehicles can use the bridge in both directions to cross the river between the two counties. Traffic flows continuously throughout the day, with heavier congestion during peak hours.
Remains of the original bridge that was destroyed in 1846 still rest beneath the surface of the Susquehanna River. These submerged remnants were buried under water when the Conowingo Dam was constructed.
