Old Main

Old Main is a university building constructed in Second Empire style, recognizable by its distinctive mansard roofs and symmetrical facade featuring ornate stone and brick work. The structure displays elaborate cornices and regularly spaced windows that create a balanced, formal appearance throughout.

The structure was designed by architect John M. Van Osdel in the late 1800s and served as the foundation for the emerging university. Its construction marked a turning point in establishing higher education in the region.

The building stands at the heart of campus life and continues to shape how visitors and students navigate the grounds. People gather here and pass through regularly, making it the focal point of daily university activity.

The main entrance on the ground floor leads inside to a central hallway connecting different spaces throughout the building. The campus tends to be most active during class times, so early mornings or late afternoons work best for a quiet visit.

The building earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural merit and role in the university's development. Its late 1800s construction makes it a rare surviving example of Second Empire style in this part of the country.
