Fort Wayne Children's Zoo

Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is a zoo in Franke Park displaying over 1,000 animals across geographical zones representing Africa, Asia, and Australia. The animals live in recreated habitats that mirror their native regions.

The zoo started in 1952 as a nature preserve in Franke Park and developed into a facility with 18 initial animal exhibits by 1965. It has continued to grow and expand its offerings since then.

Each geographical area shows animals in environments reflecting their natural habitats, helping visitors understand wildlife conservation and global ecosystems.

The zoo is open daily and can be explored on foot, with maps available to help with navigation. Pathways are well-maintained and shaded areas provide rest spots for visitors.

In 2004, five wildebeests broke through a gate and wandered Fort Wayne's streets before zoo staff captured them. This unexpected escape became a notable moment in the facility's history.
