Flora MacDonald College
Flora MacDonald College is a college listed on the National Register of Historic Places in North Carolina. The main building was constructed between 1900 and 1910 and features classical design with six sections, brick halls, and a distinctive dome topped by a domed cupola at the center.
The college was founded in the late 1800s as Red Springs Seminary and took the name Flora MacDonald College in 1914. It operated as a women's school for decades before becoming coeducational in the 1950s and closing as a separate institution in 1961.
The college is named after Flora MacDonald, a woman remembered for her bravery and compassion. A memorial stone on the grounds honors her and her role in local history.
The grounds are open for walking and exploring the classical architecture and historic features at your own pace. The outdoor spaces with old trees and open areas offer quiet spots for visiting and photography.
A memorial on the grounds honors the remains of two children of Flora MacDonald, which were moved from an unmarked grave and reinterred there in 1937. This quiet monument directly connects the person the college is named after to the physical site itself.
