Flora MacDonald College
Flora MacDonald College is a former college listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Red Springs, North Carolina. The main building, made of brick and built around 1900, has six sections and a central dome with a cupola on top.
The institution was founded in the late 1800s as Red Springs Seminary and took its current name in 1914. It ran as a women's school for many decades, became coeducational in the 1950s, and closed as a separate institution in 1961.
The college is named after Flora MacDonald, a woman remembered for her bravery and compassion. A memorial stone on the grounds honors her and her role in local history.
The grounds can be walked and the brick building with its dome is easy to see from the outside. A visit during daylight hours works best for taking in the architectural details.
A monument on the grounds marks where the remains of two of Flora MacDonald's children were reinterred in 1937, having been moved from an unmarked grave. This gives the site a direct physical connection to the person whose name it carries.
