Fort Smith Masonic Temple
Fort Smith Masonic Temple, Masonic temple in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Fort Smith Masonic Temple is a four-story building constructed with Bedford stone featuring Art Deco style throughout. It contains three large banquet halls, a main auditorium, and decorative spaces with Egyptian Revival elements and Philippine mahogany woodwork.
The building opened in 1929 after local Masonic organizations raised funds to construct a new facility following a major fire that destroyed their previous meeting place in 1919. This project became the community's answer to rebuilding their central gathering space.
The temple served as a gathering place for multiple Masonic groups, uniting different local lodges under one roof for their meetings and ceremonies. Today, visitors can sense the importance this building held for the Masonic community throughout the 20th century.
The temple is located in Fort Smith and welcomes visitors interested in viewing its architecture and interior spaces. It's best to check ahead for current visiting hours and whether guided tours are available.
Two cast sphinxes stand guard at the entrance, bringing an Egyptian mystique to the building's facade. These sculpted sentinels are among the most striking artistic features visitors encounter first.
