Fort Smith Trolley Museum, Transportation museum in Fort Smith, Arkansas
Fort Smith Trolley Museum is a transportation facility that preserves electric streetcars, railroad equipment, and four locomotives, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site features restored grounds where visitors can view a variety of rail vehicles spanning different time periods.
The museum was founded in 1985 and constructed its first building on land formerly occupied by the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1991, it began operating a restored Birney-type streetcar to carry passengers on regular rides.
The museum displays electric streetcars that shaped how people moved around the region for generations, with the vehicles reflecting when riding them was a normal part of daily life. This connection to everyday transportation helps visitors understand how communities developed around these transit lines.
The museum welcomes visitors during daytime hours most days from May through October, with shorter opening times during winter months. Groups can arrange tours outside regular hours if they book in advance.
During rides on the 1926 Birney Streetcar, costumed performers enact scenes with wild west themes that add entertainment to the journey. These performers turn what could be a simple train ride into a living historical experience.
