Genesee Country Village & Museum, Living museum in Mumford, United States
Genesee Country Village & Museum is an open-air museum with about 68 historic buildings from around 1800 or recreated from that era. The houses, workshops, and farms show how rural communities in this region functioned, with furnishings and objects that preserve their original condition.
The museum was founded in 1976 to preserve and display the history of the rural Genesee region. Many buildings were relocated from their original sites in the surrounding area to create an authentic historic settlement.
The buildings on the grounds show how people lived and worked in the 19th century, with craftspeople demonstrating old techniques. Visitors see real skills like blacksmithing, weaving, and candlemaking that were necessary parts of daily life back then.
The grounds are expansive, so comfortable shoes and sun protection are recommended, especially for longer visits. Most buildings are accessible, and there are information signs and staff members who can answer questions.
The museum operates functioning historic gardens where 19th-century vegetables and herbs are grown. These plants are then used in the museum's authentic kitchens for cooking demonstrations.
