Ingham University, First women's university in Le Roy, New York, United States.
Ingham University was a college for women in Le Roy with multiple academic buildings and specialized facilities for art instruction. The campus included residential halls, student housing, and an art conservatory displaying natural science collections.
The institution was founded in 1835 by sisters Mariette and Emily Ingham and received its university charter in 1857. The founders built it as an educational institution for women when advanced learning for females was uncommon.
The art collections drew visitors interested in natural science and artistic works displayed on campus. The conservatory served as a gathering place where artistic instruction and scientific exhibitions existed side by side.
The site was walkable and located at the intersection of Wolcott Street and Trigon Park in the town center. Visitors could easily navigate the grounds since the buildings were grouped closely together.
The art conservatory was founded in 1870 and housed rare bird collections and natural artifacts from scientific expeditions in South America. The stones from this last remaining building were later repurposed to construct the Woodward Memorial Library nearby.
