German American Heritage Center, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The German American Heritage Center is a museum and archive housed in a Victorian building from 1862 in Davenport that originally served as a hotel. It displays photographs, handwritten letters, and everyday objects from German immigrants, along with exhibits showing their journey and settlement in America.
The building was constructed in 1862 as the Germania House and served German immigrants as a hotel until closing in 1995. The center was founded in 1994, purchased the building in 1995, and after partial restoration reopened it as a museum in 2000 with expanded facilities added in 2009.
The center is named after the Germania House, reflecting its role as a gathering place for German immigrants in the 1800s. Today it serves as a space where visitors connect with the heritage and contributions of German-American communities to the region.
The center is located on West Second Street in Davenport and is easy to access, with parking and proximity to other areas of the city. Guided walking tours are offered in summer focusing on the city's architecture, while fall tours explore local legends and history from a different perspective.
A special exhibit called 'Step into my Shoes' allows visitors to step on footprints and hear personal stories from immigrants on screen. This interactive experience brings the voices and experiences of those who came to America directly to life.
