Glencairn Museum, Art museum and castle in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania.
Glencairn Museum is an art museum housed in a massive stone building featuring a nine-story granite tower and roughly 90 rooms spread across ten floors. The collection contains more than 8,000 artworks representing cultures and periods from around the world.
Raymond Pitcairn, an executive in the plate glass industry, designed and built this Romanesque structure between 1928 and 1939 as his family home. His personal vision shaped the architecture and inspired the assembly of its collections over the years.
The museum collection encompasses religious art from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, medieval Europe, along with Islamic, Asian, and Native American pieces.
The museum offers guided tours Tuesday through Friday, while weekends allow self-guided exploration of specific areas. It helps to check ahead which sections are open during your visit and how much time you should plan for exploring the building.
Inside the building stands a complete replica of the Biblical tabernacle, offering a rare look at this religious structure. The space is also filled with medieval stained glass windows throughout, which flood the rooms with colored light and create a distinctive experience.
