Robert F. Kennedy gravesite, Memorial grave in Arlington National Cemetery, United States
Robert F. Kennedy's resting place is a memorial grave in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. The site consists of a semicircular plaza built from granite, featuring a simple white wooden cross and stone walls carved with excerpts from his speeches.
After Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in June 1968, his burial took place late at night following a train journey that carried his coffin from New York to Washington. The 1971 plaza replaced a temporary grave that had been created shortly after the burial.
The gravesite, designed by architect I.M. Pei in 1971, reflects Kennedy's values through its minimalist design incorporating granite from Deer Isle, Maine.
Wide pathways throughout the cemetery make it easy to reach the grave in Section 45. The site sits on a gentle slope that offers views of other parts of the cemetery.
The burial was one of the few nighttime ceremonies at Arlington Cemetery and took place under floodlights. Thousands of people gathered along the railway line as the train traveled through East Coast states.
