Governor John Walter Smith House
Governor John Walter Smith House, Historic residence in Snow Hill, Maryland
The Governor John Walter Smith House is a residential mansion at 104 S. Church Street in Snow Hill featuring distinctive architectural elements including multiple gables, a wraparound porch, and decorative towers. The structure combines Queen Anne design features with Art Nouveau details throughout its composition.
The house was built between 1889 and 1890 under architect Jackson C. Gott's design for John Walter Smith. Smith later went on to serve as Maryland Governor and represented the state in the U.S. Senate.
The home features Art Nouveau stained glass windows scattered throughout its rooms. These windows fill the interior spaces with colored light and show the artistic care that went into the house's design.
The house sits in a residential neighborhood of Snow Hill and can be viewed from the street, though it remains a private residence. Visitors should respect the property and observe from outside, as the building is still occupied.
The interior retains original woodwork from the late 19th century that was crafted by hand. These surviving details demonstrate the quality of craftsmanship that was typical for homes of the wealthy during that time.
