Handsell, Historic brick plantation house in Vienna, Maryland.
Handsell is a brick structure in Georgian style located near Vienna, Maryland, distinguished by a projecting central pavilion and Flemish bond brickwork across its main facade. The building sits close to the Nanticoke River and shows architectural features from different construction periods.
The property was established as a trading post in 1665 when Thomas Taylor received a 700-acre land grant at the Nanticoke River near the Chicone Native American settlement. Following a major fire that destroyed the upper story, John Shehee rebuilt the structure in 1837 using the surviving original brick walls.
The property includes an authentic replica of a pre-1600 Eastern Woodland Native American homestead with traditional materials and construction methods.
The property is accessible during daylight hours and offers a self-guided audio tour by calling 410-858-4173 for details. On the grounds you will find a reconstructed Eastern Woodland Native American dwelling from before 1600 built with authentic materials and traditional techniques.
After a significant fire destroyed the second story, John Shehee rebuilt the structure in 1837, incorporating the remaining original brick walls.
