Hays-Heighe House, Historic stone house in Bel Air, Maryland, US.
The Hays-Heighe House is a stone residence with five bays and two large brick chimneys located on the Harford Community College campus. A two-story wing extends from the eastern side of the main structure.
Thomas A. Hays, one of Bel Air's founders, built this house in 1808 as his private residence. More than a century later, it was officially recognized as a historic property in 1972.
The house served as a shelter for enslaved people seeking freedom during the 1800s. Today it stands as a reminder of the assistance offered during this difficult period of history.
The house is located on the Harford Community College campus and is open to the public through guided tours and exhibits. Visitors should check ahead for current hours and educational programs being offered.
This property was the first location in Harford County to be recognized in the national Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program. The designation honors its role in helping people on their path to freedom.
