Hargrave Military Academy

Hargrave Military Academy is a boarding school with a military focus in the town of Chatham in the state of Virginia. The campus is spread across several buildings where academic instruction and leadership training are organized according to fixed rules.

T. Ryland Sanford founded the institution in 1909 as a place where young men could combine academic education and discipline in a single curriculum. Later the academy was added to the National Register of Historic Places, gaining official recognition for its role in the educational history of the region.

The extensive grounds provide space for a close-knit community where cadets attend leadership training together and practice military values in daily life. Uniforms shape the appearance of the campus, while ceremonies and drills structure the daily routine and strengthen the spirit of the corps.
