Smith Mountain Lake, Hydroelectric reservoir in Roanoke Region, United States
Smith Mountain Lake is a reservoir in Bedford, Franklin, and Pittsylvania counties in the Roanoke Region of Virginia. The shoreline extends about 500 miles and includes numerous coves, wooded peninsulas, and gentle slopes that descend into the water.
The construction of Smith Mountain Dam began in 1960 on the Roanoke River to generate hydroelectric power. The reservoir reached its normal water level in 1966, transforming the valley into a sprawling water landscape with many arms and coves.
Anglers from several states come here to catch striped bass and largemouth bass that live in the deeper sections. Local competitions take place throughout the year, and many visitors rent boats to explore the quieter coves along the wooded shoreline.
Several marinas and public boat ramps provide access to the lake, and rental facilities offer equipment for the day. The best time for water activities is from spring to fall, when the water is warmer and most facilities are open.
The water circulates between the upper lake and the smaller Leesville Lake downstream to generate power through a pump system. This dual reservoir allows energy to be stored and released on demand by moving water between the two lakes.
