Smith Mountain Lake State Park

The 1,248-acre park contains 14 miles of trails through forest areas, offering views across a 20,600-acre lake with swimming and boating facilities.

The park opened in 1983 after Appalachian Power donated the initial land parcel in 1967, following the completion of Smith Mountain Lake dam construction.

The park's visitor center maintains exhibits about local wildlife and conducts educational programs focusing on Virginia's natural resources and environmental conservation.

Twenty furnished cabins remain available year-round, while the campground operates from March through December with sites containing fire rings and access to hot showers.

The park features a dedicated fishing pier where anglers catch striped bass, largemouth bass, and catfish without requiring a boat to access deep waters.
