Herman and Anna Hanka Farm
Herman and Anna Hanka Farm, Finnish immigrant homestead in Pelkie, Michigan.
The Hanka Farm is a historic homestead with eight preserved buildings scattered across the property. The structures include the main residence, multiple barns, a bathhouse, a workshop, and other work buildings located near Highway 41.
The farm was established in 1896 by the Finnish Hanka family and remained in family hands for over 70 years. It was recognized on the National Register in 1984 and now stands as a record of Finnish immigration to the region.
The buildings show how Finnish families adapted their building styles and daily practices to this new region. You can see how they blended their traditions with the demands of the American frontier.
The site is accessible during the warmer months and self-guided tours are available for visitors to explore at their own pace. The grounds have uneven terrain and older buildings, so wear suitable shoes and allow time to wander between the structures.
The property preserves its 1920s look with original structures including a root cellar and different barns that served specific farm purposes. These details reveal how the family organized their daily work and self-sufficient living on the American frontier.
