The club was founded in 1900 by Berkeley Williams and Richmond businessmen, initially operating in Henrico County. It relocated to its current location in Manakin Sabot during the 1970s.
The club served as the venue for the 1949 PGA Championship, where Sam Snead secured his second major victory by defeating Johnny Palmer.
