Hessian Barracks, Military barracks in Frederick, US.
Hessian Barracks is a two-story limestone structure in Frederick featuring gallery porches and a gable roof built in Georgian style. The stone and wood construction shows the solid, functional design typical of military buildings from that period.
The barracks was built in 1777 and initially served military functions. It held British and German prisoners during the Revolutionary War, with its population reaching nearly 1,000 captives by 1780.
The buildings served multiple functions through time, from a state armory to hosting the Agricultural Society of Frederick County's annual exposition.
The site is currently occupied by the Maryland School for the Deaf, which limits public access to the buildings. Check ahead to find out if tours or exterior viewing is available during certain times.
Lewis and Clark stopped here in 1802 to gather supplies before heading west on their famous expedition. The barracks served as a crucial supply point for explorers charting unknown territory.
